Empty-nested and alone in her Midwestern home, Sharon (Merkerson) takes on a roommate, Robyn (Kaczmarek), who has just arrived from New York City. Before she has even unpacked, Robyn challenges everything about Sharon’s way of life. Book clubs, 80s pop music, and the occasional shared toke complicate their unlikely but enduring relationship, even as they venture into dangerous territory. <strong>Mike Donahue</strong> directs <strong>Jen Silverman</strong>’s new play which celebrates unexpected re-invention later in life.

<h3><strong>NEW MUSICAL</strong></h3>
Emmy Award winner and Tony Award nominee <strong>Lonny Price</strong> directs an intimate new musical by composer/lyricist <strong>Geoff Morrow</strong> and book writer <strong>Timothy Prager</strong> that delivers us to the intersection of loyalty, love, and ambition. Back in 1950, film producer Joseph Lindy (<strong>Jeff McCarthy</strong>) was on top of the world, making hit after hit with the love of his life and leading lady, Billie Hathaway (<strong>Lora Lee Gayer</strong>). Nearly four decades later, retired and forgotten, he must approve for release a version of his abandoned, cinematic masterpiece, an autobiographical film now altered irrevocably by a young producer. Haunted by the choices he made years ago, Joseph’s story hangs in the balance as he reconstructs the film, his memory and, ultimately, his legacy.

In 2017, what does it take for an immigrant to achieve the American Dream? With humor and humanity, playwright <strong>Jason Kim</strong> (HBO’s “Girls”) explores this question in his timely world premiere play directed by <strong>Danny Sharron</strong>. Young, Latino, gay and unapologetically ambitious, Gabriel (<strong>Hiram Delgado</strong>) arrives in New York seeking work, friendship, love and mentorship. But, before he can move forward, he must honestly determine if he is running toward success or away from what he left behind. Developed at WTF under the auspices of the Bill Foeller Fellowship Program in 2016, <em>The Model American</em> asks: what is the price we are willing to pay for a new life?

But as revelations surrounding Myles' incarceration and death emerge, both mother and son must decide whether to fight or let go. Become a Festival insider as Artistic Director <strong>Mandy Greenfield</strong> previews the 2017 season, followed by a reading of Alan Fox’s new play <i>Safe Space, </i>featuring <strong>André Holland</strong> ("Moonlight", WTF’s 2015 production of <em>Paradise Blue</em>).

<i>Safe Space</i> tells the tale of Marcus Wood (Holland), a passionate professor facing a complicated accusation from a student (<strong>Midori Francis</strong>).  The university’s president intervenes, and campus-wide protests erupt.  With the university’s reputation hanging in the balance, professor, president, and student must weigh identity politics, ethics, and core beliefs as they negotiate a way forward.

In <em>Once Upon a Time in the Berkshires</em>, three children ask their grandmother to tell a story about a time long ago. She speaks of a world made of water, of star-crossed lovers, and of banshees. With original music and dance, warriors and magical creatures flood the stage as the tale unfolds. Directed by WTF Associate Artistic Director <strong>Laura Savia</strong>, this world premiere play by Obie Award winner <strong>Lucy Thurber</strong> asks what it really means to be a hero.

COMMUNITY WORKS is WTF’s initiative that brings together local residents and professional theatre artists to make plays for and about the Berkshires. In the fall, winter, and spring, WTF conducts acting and playwriting workshops in Western Massachusetts. In the summer, more than eighty Berkshire area residents are featured on stage alongside professional actors in a free, family-friendly world premiere play. One of the truly legendary musicals in the history of Broadway, <em>Merrily We Roll Along</em> opened to enormous fanfare in 1981, and closed after sixteen performances. For the first time,"Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened" draws back the curtain on the extraordinary drama of the show's creation - and tells the stories of the hopeful young performers whose lives were transformed by it. Directed by Lonny Price, a member of the original cast, the film is a bittersweet meditation on the choices we all make, and the often unexpected consequences of those choices - through success and failure. Featuring exclusive appearances by Stephen Sondheim, Hal Prince, Jason Alexander, Mandy Patinkin, Adam Guettel, Frank Rich and the original Broadway cast of <em>Merrily We Roll Along</em>.

Each year, WTF awards the prestigious Bill Foeller and Boris Sagal Directing Fellowships to two up-and-coming directors, challenging them to create ambitious work in collaboration with writers, designers, and members of the WTF Non-Equity Company. The 2017 Bill Foeller Directing Fellowship is awarded to Estefania Fadul. The 2017 Boris Sagal Fellowship/Drama League Residency is awarded to Jenna Worsham.

In addition to this exciting work, WTF produces a re-theatricalization of a classic American play, developed by members of WTF’s Non-Equity Company. Established as one of Broadway's contemporary leading ladies, <strong>Kelli O’Hara</strong> (<em>The King &amp; I</em>, <em>The</em> <em>Bridges of Madison County</em>, <em>Far from Heaven</em> at WTF) returns to Williamstown Theatre Festival for an unforgettable, one-night-only benefit concert. Hailed by <em>The New York Times</em> as “one of the most exquisitely expressive stars in musical theatre,” the luminous Broadway diva will give us a sampling of songs from classic to contemporary musical theatre.
