The Directing Corps at WTF is a three-tiered program: the entry level Directing Internship, the intermediate Directing Assistantship, and the prestigious Fellowship Projects.

All members of the Directing Corps assist professional directors on the Main and Nikos Stages and also have the opportunity to direct their own projects with casts from the actor training companies at WTF. Directing Interns work with the Apprentices; Assistants work with the Non-Equity Company. Directing Fellows work with the Non-Equity Company and direct one of the LeapFROG Non-Equity Company productions.

The WTF Directing Assistantship is one of the premiere intermediate- level training programs for individuals who have chosen a career in directing. Directing Assistants assist a renowned professional director on one of the Festival’s Main Stage productions and also direct members of the Non-Equity Company in two projects presented to the Festival and the local communities, merging the best experiences from both the professional and educational worlds of the theatre profession. Directing Assistants are generally graduate students in directing and have had significant experience as a director and assistant director. Directing Assistants are responsible for their own daily living expenses and pay a fee for housing on the Williams College campus.

HOW TO APPLY
To apply for a directing assistantship, please submit the following:

1. A cover letter and current resume with address, phone number, and e-mail address.

2. Two written recommendations from people who can assess your qualifications and potential as a director. Please submit the title and contact information for the above with the letters of recommendation and please try to include recommendations with rest of the submission. We will still, however, accept recommendations mailed separately.

3. Please answer the following questions. Each answer should not exceed one typed page:

A) Describe a published one-act or short play you would like to direct with a small cast and limited technical resources. We are interested in seeing what kind of work intrigues you as a director. Please describe fully why this play/project matters to you.

B) Please describe two-three new one-act or short plays you would like to direct, written by a playwright with whom you have an active relationship—first drafts of the play must already be completed and works with previously produced drafts are also accepted. Please include information about the playwright, a basic plot summary of the project and why you would like to direct it.  Each answer should not exceed one paragraph.

C) What kind of director would you like to assist and why?
